PREMIER Anna Bligh wants a cap placed on the amount punters can withdraw from ATMs located within Queensland clubs, pubs and casinos.
Ms Bligh yesterday told The Courier-Mail that while a total ban on ATMs within gambling venues was too harsh, a daily spending limit could be an effective tool to fight problem gambling.
She said capping a person's ATM spend would require Federal Government legislation. However, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd had already shown his interest in tackling gambling addiction.
'The amount of money you could access at these venues you could limit,' Ms Bligh said. 'I think it would be worth considering.'
Victoria this week announced plans to ban ATMs from the floor of pokies venues. Queensland already has similar restrictions.
While hotels, clubs and casinos are allowed to install ATMs, they have to be located in an area away from where gaming is conducted.
Anti-pokies campaigners, including Tim Costello – one of the hand-picked leaders of Mr Rudd's historic 2020 ideas summit – warned this week that pokies had created a 'new crop of criminals', leaving kids hungry and families and communities 'frayed'.
However, Ms Bligh defended the proliferation of poker machines in Queensland, saying the Government's cap meant their numbers per capita would decline over the next four years.
Her comments are at odds with the majority of Queenslanders who want to slash the number of poker machines.
A new Galaxy Poll conducted exclusively for The Courier-Mail has revealed seven out of 10 voters believe the 200,000 pokies in Australia, including nearly 42,000 in Queensland, is too many. Just 1 per cent of the 800 Queenslanders polled said Australia should have more gaming machines.

Clubs Queensland executive officer Doug Flockhart also defended the number of pokies in clubs, saying few venues had the maximum 280 gaming machines, with an average of 40 machines per club.
Casino Atm Withdrawal Limit Rules
'Based on the supply and demand, it (the number of pokies) seems appropriate at the current level,' he said.
Poker machine numbers in the state grew by 578 in the year to the end of February. In the same period, Queenslanders lost $1.783 billion to gaming machines – a losing rate of $4.9 million a day. Figures from Queensland's Office of Gaming Regulation also show the amount lost to poker machines blew out by $1 million a week in the past year.
However, Ms Bligh said those people who claimed the Government was addicted to poker machine revenue ignored the facts. She said the Government earned $555 million from gaming machine taxes and levies, which represented only 1.6 per cent of total state revenue.
'When people say we are addicted to this, it is not like it is 50 per cent of the state budget,' she said.
Pnc Max Atm Withdrawal
She said reducing the number of pokies was unnecessary as the number of problem gamblers in Queensland was on the decline.
